About the Chartered Institute of Housing
The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) is the professional body for people involved in housing and communities. We are a registered charity and not-for-profit organisation. We have a diverse and growing membership of over 22,000 people - both in the public and private sectors - living and working in over 20 countries on five continents across the world. We exist to maximise the contribution that housing professionals make to the wellbeing of communities. It has offices in Coventry, London, Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh and Hong Kong. ConsultCIH is a wholly-owned subsidiary of CIH. In addition to membership, CIH services and activities include: CIH Policy, CIH Professional Practice, CIH Education, CIH Distance Learning, CIH Careers, CIH Events, CIH Training, CIH Publications and CIH Research.
CIH Membership
CIH has a grade of membership for everyone, even if you're not qualified or working in the housing sector. The grades are:
- Affiliate membership is open to anybody who has an interest in housing but has no CIH approved qualifications.
- Student membership is available to anybody who is currently undertaking a housing course recognised by the CIH.
- Practitioner membership denotes that the individual has a housing related qualification recognised by the CIH.
- Associate membership has been created to allow entry to the CIH for people who are professionally qualified in an area other than housing.
- Corporate membership denotes that the individual is professionally qualified in housing including completion of the Test of Professional Practice (TPP), or the new APEX programme.
- Fellowship status denotes that an individual is a senior member of the housing profession.

- Career Development - Working with Eden Brown, we offer members expert careers advice including a Career Health Check, web-based modules, telephone advice and help-lines, all free of charge.
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) - Helps members to identify and develop key skills and knowledge. You can also keep your own on-line CPD records to download in a CV format (compulsory requirement for Associates, Corporate members and Fellows).
- Local Support - Quality events, seminars and networking opportunities via our 9 regional CIH branches and our national committees and offices in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
- Who's Who - Our searchable on-line directory of all CIH members.
- Magazines - Delivered free to UK members every week, plus the CIH's bi-monthly Housing journal. Depending on your type of membership, you may also receive Communities Today.
- Latest Policy News - Keep up-to-date with access to policy briefing papers and consultation responses, as well as the quarterly policy briefing from our own policy team.
- Bulletins - Weekly e-mail bulletins with housing news and views, plus a quarterly newsletter for students.
CIH membership also entitles you to select extra benefits from a menu of options, depending on your type of membership and level of subscription. You decide which benefits you want to match your personal needs and circumstances. Examples of these additional services include discounts on:
- CIH publications
- CIH training courses, events and seminars
- Attendance at career development workshops
- Some discounts are also available from other organisations
The fees listed below cover the annual subscription for 2009 for the UK.
If you have never been a member before a registration fee of £75 is chargeable.

*Students registered onto CIH Certificate Courses, CIH Distance Learning Courses or CIH validated courses at universities or colleges receive FREE membership as part of the course registration fee.

No membership subscription is payable:
- when transferring from one grade to another
- when transferring from career break to full status
APEX Express consists of a training day, which when completed along with your undergraduate or post graduate housing qualification entitles you to full Corporate membership of the CIH. The registration fee is £350, which includes free student membership.
