New research focus of Transforming Communities event

Housing organisations should work more with schools, health and social care professionals to boost educational performance, improve the health and life chances of individuals and transform failing estates into popular and successful communities.

A one day conference organised by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) on 10 December and based on recent research will bring together housing, health, social care and education practitioners to share what working together can achieve in regenerating communities and building better futures for local people.

Delegates at the event in Manchester will learn first hand from practitioners featured in three new pieces of research how improved schools, better access to health care as well as physical regeneration can contribute to raising aspirations, improving the popularity and success of a community and boost the life chances of people who live there.

A number of these practitioners will lead workshops on investing in schools and linking housing, health and care provision for better outcomes. In a lead plenary the author of the recent CIH publication Transforming estates, Paul Jeffrey, Director of ECOTEC Research and Consulting Ltd, will highlight the success that physical regeneration accompanied by improved access to education, training and employment has had in four case study areas.

CIH Chief Executive, Sarah Webb said: "We are excited about bringing people from health, social care and education together to share their experiences with housing and regeneration professionals. Our new research has demonstrated that better schools, improved homes and more joined up health and care services together make better places to live and we look forward to sharing these lessons."
